Kindergarten Age Change
18472/18472_154209529_3535.jpg

A recently enacted Michigan law changed the minimum age requirement for a child enrolling in kindergarten. Currently, a student must be five years old by December 1st to be eligible for enrollment to kindergarten. New legislation will change the "cut-off" date and will be gradually phased-in over three years.

For the 2013-14 school year, children must be five years old by November 1st.

Parent Waiver Option:  If the child is not eligible for enrollment per the guidelines specified above and will be five years old by December 1 st , the child's parent or legal guardian can apply for a waiver to enroll their student in school.

Arts Council Summer Learning Opportunities
SmARTs For Kids Summer Opportunities

The Arts Council of Greater Lansing works to advocate for and advance arts and culture in our region, and that includes promoting the numerous opportunities available for youth and young adults in the arts.  As a part of its work to provide greater access to community-based arts opportunities and to grow creative problem-solving skills, the Arts Council recently launched a pilot program for youth grades K-12 called "SmArts For Kids," which initially included the production of the resource guide available by clicking here:  Resource Guide .

This summer, the Arts Council will expand and deepen the SmArts For Kids program by offering increased access to arts education for youth. As such, we are proud to announce the launch of the SmArts for Kids - Arts Scholarship Program.  The Arts Council of Greater Lansing invites parents of students in grades K-12 who demonstrate a financial need to apply by April 1 for a scholarship to offset the cost of an arts education experience provided by one of the 2013 SmArts for Kids - Arts Scholarship Program's Participating Organizations.  These organizations include:

All-of-Express Children's Theatre-- http://www.allofusexpress.org<http://www.allofusexpress.org/ >
Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum-- http://broadmuseum.msu.edu<http://broadmuseum.msu.edu/ >

MSU Community Music School-- http://www.cms.msu.edu<http://www.cms.msu.edu/ >
REACH Art Studio-- http://reachstudioart.org<http://reachstudioart.org/ >

Scholarship awards will cover the full cost for a student to attend one summer program.  Awards are funded by the Arts Council of Greater Lansing through its Arts Advancement Endowment Fund.

This is an excellent way to  bring arts opportunities into your students' lives beyond the school experience.
